Tragedy struck Saturday night near Exit 8 in Halfmoon, as a
reckless, drunk driver hit and killed two Shenendehowa seniors.
Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers, both 17, were rear ended by
22-year-old Dennis Dru of Clifton Park, causing their 2000 Ford Explorer to
roll over.
Two other students riding with Stewart and Rivers suffered multiple
bone fractures and were treated at Albany Medical Center.
According to eye-witnesses, Dru was speeding around 75 mph
and began swerving between lanes when he collided with the rear end of the Ford
Explorer, causing it to roll over multiple times and land in the highway
median.
The four students were on their way back home from the Siena
College vs. U. Albany basketball game.
Stewart was voted team captain of the Shenendehowa Plainsmen Football team and Rivers was on the varsity
softball team.
